    Recumbent Trike w/ Custom Trailer:

Winter project! One of our customers just completed this great electric trike conversion:

This conversion includes a 20" E-BikeKit Front Hub Motor and 36V/12AH SLA battery pack on a EZ USX recumbent trike. Because the customer was concerned about the extra battery weight and the possibility of flipping if mounted in the rear, he built a custom trailer to carry the batteries (and other goods) seperately. The controller is nicely concealed behind the seat and the thumb throttle is positioned on the side hand control.

Created using old bike parts, the trailer was custom built for this conversion. Notice the forks that form the wheel base and the 16" wheels from an old kids bike. The battery is mounted to the trailer in a custom leather motorcycle bag and is accompanied by an extra basket to carry goodies or a second battery pack (when needed).

With a number of other custom recumbents and unique bicycles, this customer has more projects in the works. He recently purchased and second E-BikeKit and we're excitied to see the outcome! Stay tuned for more updates!

American ingenuity at work! I like the set up, because it allows the rider to quickly detach the trailer for any number of reasons, which could include rolling it into work to keep the battery warm and recharged.

Hopefully the owner has invested in some studded snow tires; especially the front. I bought a pair of Nokians (2.0), about 10 years ago, and still use them on my electric commuter bike. My Electric Breeze 250W hub motor is on the front, so it's important now to wash-out when under power on the slippery stuff.

Actually, this customer just came in yesterday to discuss his lastest build. I don't think he's been riding much yet because of the weather, but he defintely loves working on custom bikes! Like most of us, I think he's waiting for Spring to arrive before he does most of his riding. But that hasn't stopped him from working on a second electric conversion, and this one sounds exciting too! It's completely custom, with everything built into the front wheel (ie: motor, crank, pedals, etc.). He plans on creating a quick disconnect to allow him to move the whole front end to other custom bikes. This way, he can have one drive system -- but use it on multiple setups.

We'll see how everything turns out soon... he plans on sending pics when it's completed. The nice thing about the trailer (from his original build), is he can move the trailer over to his other bikes too. Sounds like he'll have lots of options!

got very excited by the sight of this electrified trike in the snow.

i have a manhattan trike that i rode all the way through last winter, up here in Northern Ontario, and it shows, what with corrosion on the drive train and other places. (even so, what with treatments of wd40 and 3in1 oil and some very nice fellas at my local bike shop, the trike is still getting me around.)

so while i have been very tempted to add a hub motor to what is my only set of wheels to get me through this upcoming winter, i've been hesitating at the prospect of submitting a sophisticated piece of high technology such as a hub motor to the rigours of a canadian winter.

any e-bike winter riders out there who could advise me? come back anonymous or whomever!
