My son got a power kart for his birthday and on day 32 he said it just lost power.

The engine tries to run but there is just not enough torque to move him, it used to run 15-20 MPH. I took it apart thinking he ran through a puddle, but couldn't find anything wrong. When you turn on the key, the power gauge shows full, but when you twist the throttle the gauge bottoms out and the kart doesn't go.

I tried recharging the batteries and the charger just flashes red/green. So I ordered a new controller and installed it, with the same result.

When the kart is plugged into the charger the motor runs about half speed, but when you unplug it the wheels barely turn.

Could it be the motor? Could a battery tank that fast? I tested the power over the batteries and get 35.8 volts. I did not test them under stress.

I guess I need to test the voltage under stress and also try connecting the batteries straight to the motor.

    Any ideas???

    Steve,

It sure sounds like a bad battery to me...

Where did you purchase the scooter? Does it have a warranty? I would try to get those batteries replaced ASAP. I'm assuming it has cheaper SLA (sealed lead acid) batteries like most scooters. If it was sitting around in a warehouse for a long time before it was purchased, the batteries could have definitely aged and weakened. So it's very possible they could have died quickly if they were old batteries.

If it's testing at 35.8V, I'm assuming it's a 36V scooter. A 36V scooter should test between 38-40V. Testing voltage isn't always accurate, but if it's testing under 36V it would definitely imply a bad battery (assuming it's a 36V machine)...

Thanks! I will take the batteries in to a local shop and have them tested.
