Our IZIP Mountain Trailz Review:
The IZIP Mountain Trailz AL is a heavy-duty electric mountain bike with a lightweight aluminum frame. It's rugged mountain bike styling includes: high strength front suspension forks, disc brakes, knobby mountain bike tires and suspension seat post. More tough and rugged than the popular IZIP Trailz AL, this 7-speed electric mountain bike is well suited for trails, paths, dirt roads and rougher off-road conditions.
Powered by an 18lb 24V/10AH sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, the Mountain Trailz AL is quite heavy at almost 70lbs. But it's much more affordable than the Li-Ion alternatives and the battery can easily be removed for storage or charging. Another nice feature of all IZIP "RMB" (rack mounted battery) models is the ability to carry a second battery pack. Rated at up to 22 miles under ideal conditions (with pedaling), 10-15 miles is more likely for most riders. You can double that amount with a second battery, but the bike will be much heavier.
The Mountain Trailz has a 450w chain-driven motor (mounted on the left side) that isn't as efficient or "stealthy" as the expensive hub motors on some electric bike models. But it's quite powerful and will give you plenty of torque from a dead stop. Unlike our pedal assist only models, the Trailz AL includes a twist-and-go (TAG) throttle that will allow you to get up to speed without any pedaling. But your range will be limited if you don't provide assistance.
Opinions & Recommendations:
For anyone used to riding a mountain bike, the IZIP Mountain Trailz AL is a great option. Not as comfortable as some models because of its "bent-over" riding position, its well suited for rougher terrain and offroad conditions. With an aluminum frame and higher quality bicycle components, it's is a big step up from the EZIP versions available at many large retailers. But it's still moderately priced compared to our upper-end models, making it a good choice for new or experienced riders who aren't bothered by the extra battery weight.
