Our IZIP Via Mezza (EzGo) Review:
The IZIP Via Mezza (formerly known as the EzGo) is
a compact folding electric bicycle. Extremely popular because of it's versatility and compact folding design, it breaks down to the size of a suitcase in just seconds. Highly manuverable and easy for almost anyone to operate, the IZIP Via Mezza is ideal for taking on road trips, RV's, boats, airplanes, subways, campgrounds, college campuses and more.
With a removable 24V/12AH sealed lead acid (SLA) battery pack mounted below the seat, the IZIP Via Mezza is rated for 18-25 miles per charge (under ideal conditions with pedaling). Under normal conditions, riders should expect a range closer to 10-20 miles per charge. At about 55lbs, the Via Mezza is quite heavy with the battery installed, but once removed, it's very lightweight (loosing about 20lbs) and can easily be transported or charged anywhere.
The Via Mezza includes a highly efficient and compact 250w hub motor built directly into the rear wheel. It's surprisingly powerful and fast (up to 15mph), but lacks the torque of some models and may take a few seconds to get up to speed depending on your weight. Because it's throttle-controlled, there's no pedaling required. But if you run out of power, you'll only have 1-speed to work with which can limit your ability on hills or over rough terrain.
Opinions & Recommendations:
Even though the Via Mezza is very compact, it's seat is a little high for shorter riders (under 5' 4"). Since the seat post won't drop down completely due to the battery location, if a lower seating position is required, the seat post can be cut to drop the seat an extra 1"-2". But this won't be an issue for most riders.
If you're looking for a compact electric bicycle that's easy to transport almost anywhere, the IZIP Via Mezza is a great choice. Although it's function is limited since there's no gearing, it's great for traveling or commuting over flat terrain. There are other electric folding bikes out there, but it's doubtful you'll find one at this great low price. If you're looking for an upper-end model (with 7-speeds and Li-Ion), be sure to see the upgraded IZIP Via Mezza Enlightened.
