Our IZIP Via Rapido Review:
The IZIP Via Rapido is a moderately priced Lithium-Ion model that features a lightweight Li-Ion battery built into the rear rack. Similar to the EZIP Eco-Ride, it's designed specifically for commuters with optional pedal assistance, large 700c rims and narrow self-sealing tires. It's comfortable upright seating, front suspension fork and seat post make it a true hybrid, ideal on the street or any paved surfaces.
With over twice the life (and half the weight) of a cheaper sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, the Via Rapido's high quality 26V Li-Ion battery weighs just 8lbs and can easily be removed for storage or charging. At 52lbs total, it's fairly lightweight compared to other e-bike models and most riders will achieve the rated 15-22 mile per charge in pedal assist mode. For riders who prefer the throttle or have very hilly terrain, expect a range closer to 10-15 miles per charge.
NEW FOR 2010: The IZIP Via Rapido includes a high-end 250W brushless geared hub motor built into the rear wheel. Unlike it's predecessor (or the EZIP Ecoride) with an externally mounted chain-driven motor, this motor is very quiet and efficient. Barely noticeable at first glance, it provides the perfect amount of assistance for most riders and handles flat terrain and moderate hills with ease. The Via Rapido includes a twist-and-go (TAG) throttle and optional pedal assist (PAS) that can easily be selected with the handlebar control. Operate by twisting the throttle, or switch to PAS for automatic assistance while pedaling. With only one PAS setting, it's not as flexible as some pedal assist systems, but it provides a nice alternative to the throttle and can help extend your range.
Opinions & Recommendations:
Lightweight and affordable, the IZIP Via Rapido is a great commuter bike. With
it's TAG / PAS throttle, large 700c wheels and narrow self-sealing tires, this bike is well-suited for riders who enjoy to pedal and will be commuting by street. Although the Via Rapido includes suspension and can handle smooth off-road conditions, the narrow all-terrain tires will make it hard to handle in loose dirt or sand and wider tires might be more suitable on paths or bike trails.
